The synagogue was built at the beginning of the 19th century, after the war it still served as a prayer hall, later the windows were bricked up and it was used as a granary. It was demolished in July 2015, even though at that time no municipality in Slovakia allowed itself to demolish a synagogue. Thus, a piece of history for the Jewish community in Rajec was irretrievably lost.

Demolished synagogues SK (lost cultural heritage)

We have been working on the Demolished Synagogues SK project since 2022. We are looking in the archives for original photos of synagogues that no longer exist. Then we look for the places where these synagogues were built. We are contacting municipal and city authorities and asking them for help in identifying these places. A total of 81 synagogues were demolished, we have managed to find 29 so far..
